Kohl’s participates in UN-Reno’s “Competitive Edge Event”

The Career Connections department within the College of Business at the University of Nevada-Reno hosted an event entitled the “Competitive Edge Event.” It was held prior to the campus wide career fair to help students be better prepared for that event.

Among the many stations that were offered was a “Dress for Success” booth where Store Manager Heidi Creek was there to show all students how to make a strong first impression. They discussed the do’s and don’ts of attending a career fair & first interviews as well as what to do after landing their first job. Heidi also showed numerous students how to tie a tie so they were able to make an even stronger impression at the career fair.

The event served as a great way for Kohl’s to interact with strong student leaders at UN-Reno and also gave those students some “real life” advice from industry professionals. The event also served as a networking opportunity for those students who will soon be joining the workforce!

2011 Fall Forward Conference for Leadership & Social Change

On October 15th, Kohl’s took part in the “2011 Fall Forward Conference for Leadership & Social Change” at Arizona State University. The students were provided with breakfast that was sponsored by Kohl’s and began the day with a keynote presentation. They were then given the option to attend a series of workshops ranging from community initiatives, leadership, resume writing/interview skills, and professional networking among many others. The workshops were facilitated by ASU faculty with a few delivered by local community members, Kohl's being one of them. Each session had anywhere between 15 - 35 students in their “breakout session.”

The Kohl’s workshop was facilitated by District Manager Renee Pictor and University Relations Coordinator Thomas Romero. The title of the discussion was “Involvement: Committing to Community & the Environment.” Among the various issues that were discussed were Green Scene initiatives, volunteer work, and innovation within the company.

The event served as a great opportunity to meet talented students with a strong interest in making an impact on our environment as well as turn those interactions into recruiting possibilities for future leaders. Every registered attendee was given a reusable Kohl’s “Green Scene” bag, pen & highlighter. I just wanted to thank you so much for taking the time to come speak to my class today.
We all were very fortunate to listen to your advice and I sure will take into consideration all your tips—especially the “Rachel Green” remark. Kohl’s Presents in Cal State Fullerton Classrooms

On Thursday, September 29th, representatives from Kohl’s were on the Cal State Fullerton campus to present to Junior and Senior level students. The presentations were focused on the Retail Industry as well as Human Resources/Talent Management. Kohl's Representatives in attendance included Shane Knoy, District Manager, and Thomas Romero, University Relations Coordinator.

The students had a chance to get real life examples from industry professionals as well as ask any questions that might help in their career search. The “Retailing 101” presentation was delivered in conjunction with Buckle. Both companies discussed their efforts to gain and increase customer loyalty in the stores. It was a great opportunity for the student’s to understand the different approaches that take place in the retail industry.

The HR/Talent Management presentation was delivered to Senior level students and gave a glimpse into the world of HR as well as how the company assesses its talent. The students had an opportunity to test their skills during a “Celebrity Talent” activity that had them evaluate the potential of a few celebrities.

Both presentations were designed to assist the students in making the connection from their classroom studies to real world applications. All students were also encouraged to participate in the upcoming Professional Leadership Conference hosted on their campus.
