Oregon State University Career Symposium

The Department of Design & Human Environment (DHE) at Oregon State University (OSU) held its annual Career Symposium on February 2nd, 2012. This year’s theme was “Designing A Bright Future” and the symposium featured numerous employer panels, a networking session, and a great avenue for students to mingle with and get to know prospective employers. Among the employer’s was Kohl’s Department Stores, and those in attendance for the retailer were:

Salena Cook – Store Manager
Nicole Butcher – Assistant Store Manager
Jamie Ross – Assistant Store Manager
Angela Xiong – Campus Ambassador

In addition to networking with students during the mixers, all four representatives participated in one or multiple breakout sessions throughout the day. Both Salena & Angela spoke about the career opportunities Kohl’s offered during their morning breakout. OSU alumni Nicole & Jamie spoke about their transition from campus to Kohl’s during the “Recent Grad” Session. Salena also aided students in delivering the best possible resume and cover letter by offering suggestions during the “Professional Review” breakout session.

With numerous students & employers in attendance, the event continues to be successful for the DHE program. It also serves as a great platform for students to meet employers before the campus wide career fair. We hope to continue our involvement with the DHE department for many years to come!

Rachael Pratt – Campus Ambassador

In addition to receiving advice on proper etiquette, the students were also given tips and tricks on how to be successful at career fairs and job interviews. A few topics that were discussed were preparation, research, being proactive and practicing their “elevator speech.” As a close to the evening, students were also given examples of what is acceptable and not acceptable attire for professional events. Each student was also given an informational packet on career opportunities at Kohl’s.

Overall, it was a very fun and informative event for all those involved and we look to continue the success in future events, Go Cougs!
