University of South Carolina "Follow the Leaders: From College to Career" Student Leader Breakfast

The University of South Carolina Career Center hosted an inaugural student leader breakfast where Phillip Daniels, Kohl's District Manager in Columbia, SC, was invited to kick off with a keynote address. The event was developed to connect students and employers to discuss how the student's leadership experiences translate into future employment, allow employers an opportunity to share with student leaders the desirable qualities for entry-level workers, and to provide a networking experience for students. Presidents and Vice Presidents of USC Student Organizations were invited to attend this breakfast. Phillip's impactful keynote highlighted an industry perspective on how student leadership experiences propel employees into leadership positions and Kohl's culture around leadership and core values.

The breakfast and keynote was concluded with table discussions on traits and skills that employers listed as most important to them in new hires in a survey done by Dr. Phil Gardner with Michigan State University.

Kohl's Assistant Store Manager and UGA Alum, Crystal Weigle,  attended the fashion show in support.

Kohl's Regional Vice President on Campus at Indiana University

On Wednesday September 7th, Kohl's Regional Vice President, Brian Giles, Kohl's Vice President-District Manager, Melissa Garrison, and University Relations Manager, Lauren Fylstra, presented "Ethics", "Technology and Innovation", and "Brand Management" in three different Retail classes in the College of Arts and Sciences. Other Kohl's representatives in attendance were Bernadette Jones, Territory Talent Recruiter, and Evan McGowan, current IU student and Kohl's Campus Ambassador.

On Thursday September 8th, Brian Giles presented "4th Quarter Planning" to two Principles of Merchandising Classes in the Ballantine Building with Professor Janis Shaffer, Senior Lecturer Apparel and Merchandising. This presentation kicked off a semester long project the students work on related to retailing in the 4th quarter. In between classes, Kohl's hosted a lunch with the Retail Studies Organization at the Tudor Room on campus. This luncheon opportunity was announced to all 300 members of RSO, which is one of the largest and most active organizations on the IU campus.  Ten students were selected to dine and network with Kohl's executives!

"Thank you so much for all of your hard work in planning and organizing the class presentations and visit of Brian, Bernadette, and Evan to my classes and also for planning the RSO luncheon.

Brian did an amazing job in covering so much with the students, and I thought he was so inspirational! He did an excellent job talking about the importance of planning in the 4th Q and the leadership role of the management team at Kohl's. The information he shared was an excellent foundation for the project the students are doing and it is easy to see why Kohl's is such a great place for which to work.

We also appreciate [Kohl's] sponsoring the luncheon. It was very special for the students involved, and I know they really enjoyed the one-on-one time with your team. It is so inspirational to them to have these networking opportunities and to have the personal guidance and mentoring from successful industry executives." - Indiana University Professor
